What Aerospace Material Testing Taught Me About Precision Machining

From more than a decade in material testing to his new role as Director of Sales & Marketing at Reading Advanced Machining, Chris Mecleary shares insights on how quality, process control, and precision manufacturing work together to deliver confidence in every part.

Having spent much of my career in material testing across the aerospace, space, defense, and commercial industries, I’ve had the opportunity to see products at their best – and occasionally at their worst.

When a component fails testing, the root cause is rarely a single mistake. More often, it’s the result of small breakdowns in process control, communication, documentation, or quality oversight. In highly regulated industries, those small issues can lead to costly delays, rework, and program setbacks.

One lesson became clear early in my career: quality is built long before a part ever reaches a test lab.

Material testing and precision machining may seem like different disciplines, but they share the same foundation – discipline, attention to detail, and a commitment to getting it right the first time. The best manufacturers don’t simply produce parts to print. They control variables, maintain traceability, document processes, and continuously improve.
