Celazole PBI’s price makes it one of the most expensive plastic polymers on the market – with good reason. Its outstanding heat resistance and mechanical capabilities make it difficult to manufacture, but these same capabilities make it well worth the cost for precision applications. In temperatures exceeding 400ºF, Celazole® PBI has the highest heat and wear resistance as well as the best strength and mechanical property retention of any engineered polymer available. Celazole® PBI is undoubtedly the highest-performance engineering thermoplastic on the market and the best choice for specialized high-heat applications.
Celazole® PBI (polybenzimidazole) is an unfilled plastic with a unique structure that makes it highly stable and provides properties unmatched by other engineering resins. This high performance thermoplastic is most recognized for its exceptionally high glass transition temperature of 427ºC/800ºF. It has high strength, high modulus, does not burn, and is soluble in few solvents. PBI also offers better load-carrying capabilities and wear resistance at extreme temperatures than any other reinforced or unreinforced engineering plastic. Celazole® PBI can also be compounded with other polymers or cast into a film, membrane, or coating.
Celazole® PBI has the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion and highest compressive strength of all unfilled plastics. It has a continuous service capability of 750ºF in inert environments and 650ºF in air, with short-term exposure potential up to 1,000ºF. PBI is an excellent thermal insulator and other plastics that melt do not stick to it, making Celazole® PBI ideal for insulator bushings and contact seals in plastic molding and production equipment.
