What are the Benefits of PTFE Seals?

• Low friction – PTFE is best known for its lubricity. Its extremely low coefficient of friction makes it the perfect choice for high-speed rotary seals. PTFE seals can withstand speeds up to 30 m/s (5900 ft/min).
• Can withstand dry running – PTFE is self-lubricating, so PTFE seals provide excellent performance in dry, oil-free environments. They often provide longer part and service life as well as less power consumption.
• High chemical resistance – PTFE is chemically inert, and there are very few chemicals which can actually attack PTFE. Since it is inert to most caustic fluids, PTFE seals are particularly valuable in highly contaminated applications.
• Hydrophobic – Both PTFE and the seals made from it are almost totally resistant to water and other liquids. This makes PTFE seals the standard option for applications where liquids must be contained.
• Wide operating range – PTFE maintains its properties over a wide range of temperatures, from –70° to +250°C (–95° to +480°F). Additionally, PTFE seals can withstand pressures up to 3.5 MPa (500 psi).
• FDA compliance – Nearly all forms of PTFE are FDA-approved as safe for use in food and drug preparation, making it a go-to choice for those industries.

While there are numerous benefits of PTFE, pure PTFE has very little elasticity and is prone to creep over time. There is a modified co-polymer of PTFE, PFA (perfluoroalkoxy), that is creep resistant and is still very chemically resistant, flexible and thermally stable. Fillers can also be added to PTFE to increase its strength and prevent it from deforming under load, but these fillers can decrease chemical resistance and may not be FDA approved.
