The Benefits of Stainless Steel Turned Parts

Stainless steel is one of the most popular industrial alloys due to its excellent physical properties, such as excellent heat and impact resistance, good performance at both high and low temperatures, very high tensile strength, excellent durability, and good formability. Stainless steel is also hygienic and easy to clean, self-protective and typically doesn’t require surface finishing.

But above all, stainless steel is known for its corrosion resistance. It does not rust or corrode like regular steel, making it the perfect solution for applications that experience high moisture or humidity. Stainless steel’s corrosion resistance is due to its chromium content and a process known as passivation. When exposed to oxygen, chromium forms a thin film of chromium oxide over the stainless steel surface, protecting the underlying iron from rusting. To optimize this process, stainless steel parts are dipped in an acid bath that dissolves free iron from the surface, leaving behind a uniform surface that contains a higher proportion of chromium than the underlying material. After the acid bath, the oxygen in the air triggers the formation of a chromium oxide layer over the next 24 to 48 hours. The resulting layer is chemically non-reactive and void of free iron that would provide an opportunity for corrosion to start. This same process is what makes stainless steel self-protective. Should the part become scratched, it will quickly rebuild a protective layer in the presence of oxygen.
